Shri Chandra Prabhu Temple in Tijara

Shri Chandra Prabhu Digambar Jain Atishaya Kshetra Dehra Tijara is an ancient Jain temple, where many people including pilgrims and tourists visit every year. This Atishaya Kshetra (Place of Salvation) is situated in the hill top of Tijara city of Akwar District in Rajasthan State.

History of the Temple

The temple, which was established in 1956, is dedicated to Bhagwan Chandra Prabhu. In 1956 August 16, the white stone idol of Chandra Prabhu was retrieved from underground and a temple was constructed for worshiping this idol. This incident reinforces the belief that Dehra Tijara was the center of Jain community and Jain temples at some time. The place where the worship of Jain idols takes place is known as Dehra. It is assumed that the invaders in the middle period of Indian history destroyed this Dehra. After the establishment of this Jain temple, the place has regained its former significance as a pilgrimage spot.

Highlights of the Temple

Bhagwan Chandra Prabhu, the eighth Teerthankar, is the principal deity of Tijara Atishaya Kshetra. The idol of Chandra Prabhu that got from underground is very attractive and beautiful and made in white stone. This idol has 15 inch height and is in Padmasana posture. The inscription on the idol revealed that it was installed in 1554 on the third day of Vishakha Shukla.

Another idol of Bhagawan Chandra Prabhu was also discovered in 1972 March 29. It happened when the place under the gate of a room located in south of the temple premises was digging under the guidance of Poojya Acharya Nirmal Sagarji Maharaj. This idol is also in Padmasana posture, but made up of black stone. It has 8 inch height.

Both the idols are installed in a rectangular temple that is vast, attractive and beautiful with decoration of great sky-high pinnacle. The temple has a magnificent exterior and charming interior. The hall of the temple is too large to accommodate 2000 persons at a time. You can see decoration fantastic work of glass and colourful painting based on mythological stores decorated both sides of the hall chambers and walls. The marvelous idols of Bagwan Parshvanath and Bhagwan Mahaveer can also be seen in the temple.

The temple has dharmashala that consists of 234 general rooms and 38 with attached let-bath, 2 deluxe rooms, 60 semi deluxe rooms. The mess in the dharmashala provides items like bed, tent, utensils etc to the pilgrims.

The time for worship in Tijara Sri Chandra Prabhu Digambar Jain Atishaya Kshetra Dehra is 6 am to 10 pm. Annual gatherings take place on 10th day of Shravan Shukla and 7th day of Falgun Shukla every year. Ratha Yatra Utsav takes place in Falgun Shukla.

Tijara Jain temple is 55 km away from Alwar and 110 km away from Delhi. While the nearest airport to the temple is at Delhi and Jaipur, Alwar railway station is the nearest major railway station that connects the city with all main cities of India. Buses are also available from major cities of India like Delhi, Jaipur and Alwar etc. Tourists mainly depend on jeep services or taxis to reach to the temple from Tijara Bus stand.

There is another beautiful ancient Jain temple in Tijara city, which was constructed in V.S 1895. This temple has marvelous pinnacles. Bhagwan Parshvanath, 23rd Teerthankar, is the principal deity of this temple. Another main idol of Bhagwan Neminath, 22nd Teerthankar, was installed here in V.S 1135. In V.S 1548, other idols were also installed in this temple.
